Mechanical Fanfare

for trumpet, trombone, 2 percussion, and piano (2006) - 5'
(excerpt)

1st place in 2006 NACUSA Young Composers Competition

Program notes:

Similar to Unsuk Chin's Fantasie Méchanique, Mechanical Fanfare is based on a dream, more specifically, a recurring nightmare. Lost somewhere in a maze of corridors, the pounding sound of some machine slowly gets louder. Although I run away from the sound, the consistent thumping seems to get louder and the corridors begin to rattle. The sound only stops when I stop running, but for some reason, I only stop for brief moments. When the machine finally reveals itself, a blinding light emerges and I violently wake up.
